The original Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP) protocol used throughout the 1980’s and into the mid-1990’s was also somewhat confusingly named EGP. However, the EGP protocol had several problems, most notably an inability to scale up to support the growth in the size of the Internet. EGP has since become superseded by the BGP protocol.
